Origin & Legend
Youchaoshi is a legendary primordial sage famed for teaching people to build nests in trees for shelter. Known also as the Great Youchaoshi, he lived in an age when early humans dwelled in caves or roamed the wilderness, suffering daily from sun exposure, rain, and nocturnal threats posed by venomous insects and ferocious beasts. Observing birds constructing nests among tree branches, Youchaoshi was inspired to instruct his people to erect wooden nests aloft—gathering acorns by day and sleeping safely above ground by night. This innovation spared them from predatory attacks and enabled stable communal life; consequently, he was acclaimed sovereign over all under heaven. As recorded in the Han Feizi: 'He constructed wooden nests to avoid myriad perils… and was thus hailed as Youchaoshi.' Youchaoshi is regarded as the earliest originator of Chinese architectural tradition, standing alongside Suirenshi (the Fire-Driller) and Fuxishi (the Divine Farmer) among the most revered sages of antiquity. The enduring human aspiration—for every person to have a secure home—began precisely with this Nest-Dwelling Ancestor.
