Origin & Legend

Dianmu is the divine consort and close collaborator of Leigong. In early mythology, thunder deities performed both thunder and lightning functions; however, by the Song dynasty, as the Daoist Lei Bu cosmological system matured, the specific domain of lightning became Dianmu’s exclusive purview. Folk tradition holds that Leigong suffers impaired vision and cannot clearly distinguish the righteous from the wicked, risking unjust strikes against the virtuous. To remedy this, the Celestial Emperor appointed Dianmu to precede thunderclaps by shining her sacred mirror upon the mortal world, thereby revealing moral truths before Leigong delivers judgment—giving rise to the natural sequence of lightning before thunder. This theological arrangement imbues celestial retribution with clarity and fairness, embodying popular aspirations for cosmic justice. Across successive dynasties, Dianmu has held a steadfast position of prominence within the Lei Bu pantheon, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Leigong, Fengbo (Wind Earl), and Yushi (Rain Master); her veneration continues unbroken to this day.
