Origin & Legend

Zhenxing is the deified form of Saturn, so named because its orbital period of roughly twenty-eight years allows it to dwell for one year in each of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions—akin to an emperor touring his realm. In traditional Chinese astrology, Zhenxing governs earth-related undertakings, calamities such as drought and mourning, and the safety and stability of the state; its speed, direction, and luminosity were all interpreted as omens portending fortune or misfortune for humanity. Within Daoism, Zhenxing is venerated as Lord Zhenxing of Earth Virtue, associated with the central direction and the Earthly Branches Wu and Ji (representing Earth virtue), and honoured in the Nine Luminaries Ritual. When anomalous movements of Zhenxing appeared, ancient emperors would cultivate moral virtue and perform rites of atonement to avert disaster; meanwhile, commoners, during years when their personal fate clashed adversely with Saturn’s transit, would offer repentant prayers and ritual petitions for peace and protection—embodying a profound cultural tradition wherein celestial phenomena serve as warnings to humanity, and ritual purification becomes an act of self-reflection and ethical renewal.
