Origin & Legend
Taiyin Xingjun is the Daoist lunar deity of the Moon Palace, formally titled Yuegong Taiyin Huangjun (Imperial Sovereign of the Moon Palace), counterpart to the Sun Star Lord (Taiyang Xingjun), governing the essence of Yin energy and illuminating the night. Daoist scriptures venerate her divine rank as Xiaodao Mingwang (Radiant King of Filial Piety), signifying that the waxing and waning of the moon mirror the flourishing and decline of human affairs. Though popularly associated with the mythological figure Chang’e, Taiyin Xingjun holds a higher, more exalted divine status. On Mid-Autumn night, devotees set up incense altars to worship the moon, with women offering prayers for happy marriages, timely conception of noble offspring, and radiant beauty. In Fujian and Taiwan, she is affectionately revered as Yuèniáng Mā (Moon Maiden Mother); customs such as moon worship, divination by incense smoke ('listening to incense'), and child-blessing rituals remain vibrant to this day, establishing her as the central deity of Chinese lunar veneration.
