Origin & Legend

The Seven Star Lords of the Big Dipper are personifications of the seven stars of the Big Dipper, venerated in Daoism as the Seven Primordial Star Lords: Tanlang, Jumen, Lücun, Wenqu, Lianzhen, Wuqu, and Pojun. Each resides in one of the seven stellar palaces and presides over a distinct aspect of calamity relief. Their core scripture is the Supreme Mysterious Ling ‘Scripture on the Original Life-Prolonging Power of the Big Dipper’, which teaches that all human destinies originate from the Dipper’s celestial bureau, and that each person’s natal star deity corresponds to the star associated with their birth year—thus requiring ritual homage to the Dipper during one’s birth year for blessings and protection. Ancient texts asserting that the Southern Dipper records births while the Northern Dipper records deaths lent profound weight to the cult of the Big Dipper; Zhuge Liang’s famous ritual of star-appeasement to extend his lifespan at Wuzhang Plains was directed specifically toward the Big Dipper. Daoist temples hold grand nine-day liturgical ceremonies honouring the Dipper annually from the 1st to the 9th day of the 9th lunar month, drawing immense popular devotion. Doumu Yuanjun (the Celestial Mother of the Big Dipper) is revered as their divine mother, and the Year-Deity (Tai Sui) gods likewise fall under their sovereign authority.
