Origin & Legend

Xing is the fourth of the Seven Lunar Mansions associated with the Vermilion Bird of the South and is classified under the solar element; its celestial embodiment is the Heavenly Horse. The seven stars of the Xing mansion are arranged in a hook-like formation, symbolising the Vermilion Bird’s neck; in antiquity they were collectively known as the ‘Seven Stars’ and governed matters relating to garments, embroidery, and urgent affairs. In Daoism, this mansion is venerated as Xing Ri Ma Xingjun. According to traditional astrological interpretation, when the Xing mansion shines brightly, propriety and decorum in attire and social conduct flourish throughout the realm. In popular practice, devotees worship Xing Ri Ma Xingjun to secure flourishing careers and safe journeys; travellers customarily offer prayers before departure, beseeching unimpeded roads and protection en route.
