Origin & Legend
The Thirty-Six Tiangang are a constellation of celestial sovereigns within the Daoist stellar-martial system—known collectively as the Thirty-Six Tiangang Star Lords—and form, together with the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiends (Disha), the complete roster of One Hundred and Eight Stellar Fiends. Tiangang refers to the righteous cosmic energy emanating from the handle of the Northern Dipper constellation. In Daoist liturgical practice, priests invoke the Tiangang stars to dispel pollution and exorcise evil; the ritual ‘stepping the Tiangang and treading the Dipper’ involves visualizing one’s body as aligned with the Tiangang stars and commanding their purifying qi-energy. Later vernacular literature, notably the classic novel Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan), adopted the Thirty-Six Tiangang as a symbolic framework for its One Hundred and Eight Heroes, thereby popularizing their names widely among the populace. Within Daoism, the Tiangang Star Lords are regarded as celestial warriors commissioned by Heaven to mete out justice: in all major Daoist rituals—including grand offerings (jiao) and exorcisms—their invocation is invariably the first step, deploying their unyielding, righteous energy to suppress demonic forces and safeguard sacred ritual grounds.
