Origin & Legend
Suixing—the Year-Star—is the deified form of Jupiter. Ancient Chinese astronomers observed that Jupiter completes roughly one circuit of the heavens every twelve years, leading to its adoption in calendrical systems for marking annual cycles—a practice known as the 'Year-Star Chronology'. In traditional astrological belief, the region over which the Year-Star shone was destined for abundant harvests and auspicious fortune; thus, popular tradition gradually identified the Year-Star with the 'Fortune Star', one of the Three Stars of Fortune, Prosperity, and Longevity—a conception rooted directly in the veneration of Suixing. Within Daoism, Suixing is honoured as Mude Suixing Zhenjun, the True Lord embodying the Wood Virtue and presiding over the life-giving energies of the East, integrated into the cosmological framework of the Five Directions and Five Virtues. The cult of Suixing thus weaves together two enduring strands of ancient Chinese thought: the astronomical precision of observing celestial phenomena to regulate time, and the heartfelt, down-to-earth aspiration for peace and prosperity year after year.
