Shi Huo Zhu (Encampment Fiery Pig)

The Shi constellation is the sixth of the Seven Northern Xuanwu Constellations and belongs to the Fire element, manifesting in the form of a black boar. Also called Ying Shi (‘Camp Enclosure’), this asterism was used by ancient Chinese astronomers to determine propitious times for constructing dwellings and palaces: when the Shi stars reached the meridian at dusk in the tenth lunar month, it signaled the ideal season for building roofs and houses. In Daoism, this constellation is venerated as Master Star Lord Shi Huo Zhu. Astrological tradition holds that the Shi constellation governs the imperial palace and ancestral temples of Heaven; its brightness portends peace and stability throughout the realm. In folk practice, devotees worship Shi Huo Zhu to ensure smooth construction projects, prosperous and harmonious households, and plentiful food and clothing.
