Origin & Legend
The Shen mansion is the final of the Seven Mansions of the White Tiger in the West and is associated with the Water element, taking the form of a white ape. Astronomically, it corresponds to the three prominent belt stars of the Orion constellation—the most resplendent stellar grouping visible in winter skies—and was known in antiquity as the 'Shen' star in the classical phrase 'Shen and Shang never meet', referring to two constellations that never appear simultaneously above the horizon. In Daoist tradition, it is venerated as Lord Shen Shui Yuan. Astrological lore holds that the Shen mansion governs cutting, severing, and martial suppression, serving as the abode of generals and commanders among the stars. In popular worship, devotees honour Lord Shen Shui Yuan to enhance martial fortune and dispel misfortune or malevolent influences. Because the Shen and Xin mansions (Orion and Antares) are diametrically opposite in the sky and thus never visible together, they have become a poetic symbol of irrevocable separation—hence the literary allusion 'Shen and Shang parting'.
