Origin & Legend
Shancai Tongzi is the central protagonist of the 'Entry into the Dharma Realm' chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra). Born as the son of a wealthy elder of Fortunate City, he was named 'Auspicious Wealth Youth' because precious treasures spontaneously manifested at his birth. After generating the bodhicitta (aspiration for enlightenment), he followed the guidance of Manjushri Bodhisattva and journeyed southward to visit fifty-three enlightened teachers—including monks, nuns, lay practitioners, sages, ship captains, and even young maidens—culminating in his encounter with Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, through whom he attained realization of the Dharma Realm. This renowned narrative of the 'Fifty-Three Visits' (often mistakenly cited as 'Thirty-Three Manifestations') became deeply embedded in Chinese Guanyin devotion: Shancai Tongzi and Longnü (the Dragon Girl) came to be enshrined together as Guanyin’s two principal attendants in temple Guanyin Halls, forming a standard iconographic triad. His image of unwavering humility and diligent inquiry has since become a timeless symbol inspiring students and seekers in their academic and spiritual endeavors.
