Origin & Legend

Amitabha Buddha—whose name means 'Infinite Light' and 'Infinite Life'—is the Sovereign Buddha of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. According to the Infinite Life Sutra, he was formerly Dharmakara Bhikshu, who, before Shizizaiwang Buddha, made the Forty-eight Vows to establish a pure, sublime realm—the Pure Land—and to welcome all beings who recite his name from the ten directions. The Pure Land School centers its practice on chanting 'Namo Amitabha Buddha', a devotional formula that has permeated Chinese folk culture so deeply that the saying goes: 'Every household venerates Guanyin; every door chants Amitabha.' Greetings among Buddhists often begin with 'Amitabha Buddha', and temples across China hold week-long Amitabha Buddha retreats (Amituofo Qi) on the 17th day of the 11th lunar month—the Buddha’s birthday—during which continuous chanting echoes through temple halls. This single phrase remains the most widely recited and culturally resonant Buddhist mantra in China.
