Origin & Legend

The Santai Star Lords embody the divine personifications of the six stars constituting the Santai asterism. Located beneath the Ziwei Enclosure, these stars appear in three pairs arranged like ascending steps, which ancient astronomers likened to the imperial staircase—hence their name ‘Celestial Staircase’. In traditional astrological interpretation, the Santai asterism corresponds to the Three Excellencies: the Upper Terrace governs fate and longevity, the Middle Terrace oversees lineage distinction and official rank, and the Lower Terrace administers stipends, military affairs, and state granaries. Within Daoism, they are venerated as the Santai Star Lords, and during the Doumu (Big Dipper) worship liturgy, lamps symbolizing the three terraces are ritually lit upon the altar to invoke their power over destiny and emoluments, and to dispel calamities while extending life. Throughout history, scholar-officials gazed upon the Santai stars to divine prospects for official promotion and distinction; thus, the Santai became an enduring astral emblem of supreme political attainment and unimpeded career advancement.
