Origin & Legend

The Kui Mansion, the first of the Seven Lunar Mansions associated with the White Tiger in the west, is classified under the Wood element and manifests in the form of a dark wolf. Its sixteen stars resemble the sole of a worn-out shoe, earning it the ancient epithet ‘Celestial Treasury’ and linking it symbolically to literary achievement and scholarly distinction. In Daoist tradition, it is venerated as Lord Kui Mu Lang. In *Journey to the West*, Kui Mu Lang descends to the mortal realm as the Yellow Robe Demon and forms a fateful bond with the Princess of Baoxiang Kingdom—making him one of the most prominently featured figures among the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions. In popular devotion, worshippers pray to Lord Kui Mu Lang for success in examinations and literary pursuits; his cult is also historically intertwined with that of Kui Xing (the Star of Literary Eminence) and Kui Xing’s later syncretic counterpart, Kui Xing (the Scholarly God of the First Rank).
