Origin & Legend
Huaguang Dadi is also known as Lingguan Ma Yuanshuai (Divine Marshal Ma Yuan) and Matianjun (Marshal Ma); popularly called 'Ma Wangye' (Lord Ma) in folk tradition. The proverb 'If I don’t show you some real power, you won’t know Lord Ma has three eyes!' refers precisely to this deity. Legend holds that he originated as the flame-blossom of the lamp before the Buddha Sakyamuni, later undergoing successive incarnations to become the God of Fire. With a golden face, fangs, and three lightning-like eyes, he wields a three-pronged golden spear and the magical golden brick, presiding over all matters concerning fire in the mortal world and discerning virtue from vice. His cult flourished particularly in southern China, where Cantonese opera troupes revere him as their patron deity; newly constructed opera stages are always consecrated with offerings to Huaguang to prevent fire disasters. The Huaguang Temple in Foshan serves as his principal ancestral temple. His sacred birthday festival spans from the 8th to the 28th day of the 9th lunar month, during which elaborate processions carrying his statue take place across Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, drawing immense crowds and fervent devotion. He is venerated as a celestial guardian who expels evil, protects homes, and suppresses conflagrations.
