Origin & Legend
Taiyi Zhenren is one of the Twelve Golden Immortals of Kunlun Mountain in the classic Ming-dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods. He resides at Jinguang Cave on Qianyuan Mountain and serves as Nezha’s preceptor. After Nezha drowned himself in the sea and then dismembered his own body to return his bones and flesh to his parents, Taiyi Zhenren reconstructed his physical form using two lotus blossoms and three lotus leaves, bestowed upon him the Fiery-Tipped Spear and the Wind-and-Fire Wheels, and thereby enabled Nezha’s rebirth as a Lotus Incarnation—a profoundly moving episode in the epic Battle of Fengshen. Wielding a ceremonial whisk and commanding formidable treasures such as the Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Censer—which he once used to immolate the demoness Shiji Niangniang—Taiyi Zhenren embodies both profound cultivation and deep, protective compassion. Jinguang Cave on Qianyuan Mountain in Jiangyou, Sichuan Province, is traditionally regarded as his sacred abode; its cult has grown steadily over time, and folk devotion venerates him as a compassionate immortal who safeguards children and grants spiritual rebirth and deliverance from calamity.
