Origin & Legend
Deng Chanyu is the daughter of Deng Jiugong, commander of the Sanshan Pass during the Shang dynasty, and appears in the classic Ming-dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods. Skilled in hurling the Five-Light Stone—a weapon that never missed its mark—she first fought alongside her father against the Zhou forces at Xiqi, wounding renowned Zhou generals including Nezha and Huang Tianhua. Later, she and her father defected to the Zhou side; she married the earth-travelling immortal Turun Sun and fought valiantly beside him until her death at the hands of Gao Lanying during the Battle of Mianchi. Upon completing the divine investiture, Jiang Ziya enfeoffed Deng Chanyu as Liuhe Xingjun. Among the pantheon of deified figures in Investiture of the Gods, she stands out as one of the rare female generals capable of commanding independently on the battlefield—her martial prowess matched by unwavering loyalty and deep conjugal devotion. Her marriage to the diminutive yet mighty Turun Sun—marked by striking physical contrast yet profound emotional resonance—has become a celebrated and enduring legend. In certain regions of China, she is venerated with incense offerings in temples dedicated to Investiture of the Gods characters or in Niangniang Dian (Halls of the Goddesses).
