Origin & Legend
Zhang Daoling, styled Fulian, was a native of Peiguo during the Eastern Han dynasty and traditionally regarded as the eighth-generation descendant of the famed Han statesman Zhang Liang. Having served as magistrate of Jiangzhou, he later resigned his post to cultivate the Dao in Hemingshan (Crane-Cry Mountain) in Sichuan. During the Yonghe era (136–141 CE), he claimed to have received direct revelation from the Most High Lord Lao (Daode Tianzun), who conferred upon him the Orthodox Unity and Alliance of Might (Zhengyi Mengwei) Dao, thereby founding the Way of the Five Pecks of Rice. He healed the sick using talisman-infused water and incantations, taught followers to embrace the Dao and repent their transgressions, and attracted vast numbers of adherents. He further established twenty-four administrative and ritual centers (zhi), each overseen by a libationer (jijiu), thus laying the organizational foundations of institutional Daoism. Legend recounts that he subdued the Eight Demon Commanders and Six Heaven Demonic Kings at Mount Qingcheng, binding ghosts and deities to the netherworld and establishing a clear division between human and spirit realms. His descendants inherited the title of Celestial Master across successive generations, sustaining an unbroken lineage centered at the Celestial Masters’ Mansion on Longhushan for nearly 1,900 years—earning the epithet 'Southern Zhang, Northern Kong' in parallel with the Confucian Kong (Kongzi/Confucius) lineage.
