Origin & Legend
Yanguang Niangniang, also known as Yanguang Shengmu Huizhao Mingmu Yuanjun (Holy Mother of Bright Vision, Illuminating and Clarifying the Eyes), is a key figure within the Bixia Yuanjun (Empress of Mount Tai) pantheon and is worshipped alongside other attendant deities such as Songzi Niangniang (Goddess of Childbirth) and Cuseng Niangniang (Goddess of Labour Assistance) in side chapels adjacent to the main Bixia Yuanjun Hall. In premodern times, ophthalmological treatment was rudimentary and blindness or chronic eye disease constituted one of life’s gravest afflictions; thus, pious believers created this divine persona. Those afflicted with eye disorders would ascend Mount Tai to make offerings and prayers, or worship at local Niangniang Temples, pledging vows for healing. Upon recovery, they fulfilled their vows by presenting silver-crafted eyes or paper-cut 'bright eyes' as tokens of gratitude—rituals collectively termed 'returning the gift of sight'. In temple iconography, Yanguang Niangniang holds aloft a glowing eye, symbolising her power to penetrate and dispel ocular afflictions. This cult flourished historically among devotees in North China and among Mount Tai pilgrims, and continues to draw steady devotion to this day.
