Origin & Legend

Wu Guan Wang Lü serves as the 冥 king of the Fourth Court, tasked specifically with investigating souls guilty of evading land taxes and rent obligations or engaging in fraudulent trade during their earthly lives. He presides over the He Da Di Yu (Great Converging Hell) and oversees subsidiary punitive realms such as the Pool of Blood and Tears. His iconic abacus symbolises the precise, unforgiving reckoning of merits and demerits—no transgression escapes calculation. Merchant guilds and trading associations in traditional Chinese society frequently invoked his image as a solemn warning against dishonesty. The epithet 'Wu Guan' ('Five Officials') may derive from Daoist bureaucratic concepts concerning the 'Five Officials' who examine and register souls’ karmic records. His birthday on the 18th day of the 2nd lunar month is observed with ritual offerings, serving as a moral admonition to merchants that integrity is non-negotiable—and that infernal retribution is both certain and inescapable.
