Origin & Legend

Bai Wuchang’s personal name is Xie Biaan, meaning 'Xie ensures divine recompense and guaranteed peace.' He and Hei Wuchang, Fan Wujiu, are jointly known as the Seventh Lord and Eighth Lord. Legend recounts that the two swore brotherhood and agreed to meet beneath a bridge; when torrential rain delayed Xie’s arrival, Fan—upholding his pledge—waited loyally beneath the bridge and drowned. Overwhelmed by grief and guilt, Xie hanged himself. Moved by their extraordinary fidelity and righteousness, the Celestial Emperor appointed both as soul-harvesting envoys. Xie’s tall white hat bears the inscription 'One glance brings wealth' or sometimes 'You’ve arrived too,' reflecting his ambiguous role as both omen of death and harbinger of fortune. Revered as a deity embodying unwavering integrity and capricious fate, he is especially venerated in Taiwan and Fujian, where processions of the Seventh Lord are believed to purify the land by expelling malevolent forces.
