Origin & Legend
Fan Wujiu, the Black Impermanence, whose name signifies 'no salvation for lawbreakers', was sworn brothers in life with Xie Biaan, the White Impermanence. In the legendary tale of their fidelity, Fan Wujiu drowned while waiting beneath a bridge to keep a promise; Xie Biaan, overcome with grief and loyalty, hanged himself in mourning—whereupon the Celestial Emperor appointed Fan Wujiu as a divine enforcer tasked with apprehending evildoers and reaping the souls of wicked spirits. His tall black hat bears the stark warning 'I am coming for you right now', and his iron chain is specially designed to bind only the most ferocious ghosts and malignant spirits. In folk tradition, the Black and White Impermanence appear together on patrol—a complementary pair embodying mercy and justice, gentleness and severity—serving as moral exemplars who urge humanity toward virtue and away from vice. In the Min-Tai region’s Ba Jia Jiang (Eight Generals) ritual procession, the figure of the 'Eighth General'—modelled on Hei Wuchang—is renowned for his awe-inspiring presence and formidable reputation.
