Origin & Legend
The Wufang Wulao are venerated in Daoism as the Wufang Wulao Jun—the Five Elder Lords of the Five Directions: Qingling Shilao Cangdi (Azure Lord, the Primordial Elder of the East), Danling Zhenlao Chidi (Vermilion Lord, the Perfected Elder of the South), Yuanling Yuanlao Huangdi (Yellow Lord, the Primordial Elder of the Centre), Haoling Huanglao Baidi (White Lord, the August Elder of the West), and Wuling Xuanlao Heidi (Black Lord, the Mysterious Elder of the North). Each governs one of the five celestial regions—east, south, centre, west, and north—and corresponds to one of the Five Phases and Five Colours. According to Daoist scriptures, the Five Elder Lords emerged from primordial qi before the separation of heaven and earth, ranking immediately below the Three Pure Ones yet above all other deities in authority; they assist the Three Pure Ones in harmonising yin and yang and deploying divine beings throughout the cosmos. Their cult synthesises ancient Chinese cosmological beliefs in the Five Directional Sovereigns with later Daoist theology, and their statues are commonly placed alongside the main altar in the Hall of the Three Pure Ones; rituals, offerings, and liturgical petitions invariably invoke the Five Elder Lords for protection and blessing.
