Origin & Legend
Wudao Jiangjun is a deity of the netherworld entrusted with overseeing the examination and assignment of souls to the Five Paths—Heavenly Path, Human Path, Hell Path, Hungry Ghost Path, and Animal Path—and wields immense authority; Tang and Song dynasty texts state that he may even pronounce life-and-death decrees on behalf of Yama, King of the Underworld. Because his temples were traditionally erected at village entrances, bridges, and other key thoroughfares, he also assumed the role of guardian of safe passage for travelers—making him one of the most accessible and intimately venerated deities of the underworld among common folk. In traditional vernacular expression, an improvement in one’s fortune was said to signify that one had 'entered the Five Paths’ auspicious cycle'. To this day, rural Wudao Temples persist across northern Chinese villages, their incense burners continuously tended during festivals and seasonal celebrations.
