Origin & Legend
Wei Huacun, styled Xian’an, was a native of Rencheng during the Western Jin dynasty and daughter of the Grand Tutor Wei Shu. From childhood she cherished the Dao and yearned for transcendence. At age twenty-four, she married Liu Wen and bore two sons; thereafter she withdrew to a quiet chamber, observing strict fasting and unceasing cultivation. Legend holds that the Celestial Master Qingxu Zhenren (Wang Bao) and other immortals descended to transmit to her the Shangqing Dadong Zhenjing (Shangqing Great Cavern True Scripture) and the Huangting Neijing (Yellow Court Inner Scripture), establishing her as the first ordained female libationer in Daoist history—and the earliest woman adept documented with certainty. The Huangting Jing advocates visualization of the body’s divine deities and inner-landscape cultivation techniques; Wang Xizhi later transcribed it as a calligraphic sutra, securing its status as a timeless classic. In the Eastern Jin dynasty, Yang Xi, Xu Mi, and others, based at Mount Mao, claimed to receive revelations attributed to Wei Huacun, transmitting the Shangqing scriptures and talismanic registers—thus founding the Shangqing School. Later generations revered her as its Founding Patriarch and enfeoffed her as Zixu Yuanjun, conferring upon her the title Lady of Mount Nanyue.
