Origin & Legend

Wang Lingguan’s secular name was Wang Shan. Legend holds he lived during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Song dynasty and was transformed into a guardian deity after receiving initiation from the Daoist master Sa Zhenren. He enjoyed extraordinary veneration during the Ming dynasty, especially under the Yongle Emperor, when Lingguan Halls were erected at temple mountain gates across the empire. As the supreme guardian deity of Daoism, he stands sentinel at temple entrances: his three all-seeing eyes discern loyalty from treachery, while his golden whip strikes down only demonic forces and malign influences. A popular folk saying declares: 'His three eyes behold all affairs under heaven; his single whip startles mortals awake to reality.' Devotees customarily pay homage to Lingguan first upon entering a temple, seeking his scrutiny of their conduct and his power to expel evil and safeguard the household.
