Origin & Legend
Tudipo is the divine consort of Tudigong, enshrined alongside him in local Tudigong temples throughout China. According to popular legend, she was originally a celestial maiden from the immortal realm who descended to earth out of compassion for Tudigong, who had long served alone as guardian of the local land; she married him and thereafter assisted him in managing the myriad daily affairs of village life. In the Chaoshan region, Tudipo is especially revered—sometimes identified as the consort of the Three Mountains Kings or honoured as the ‘Lady of the Local Domain’—and households routinely report major life events such as weddings, childbirths, and house construction first to her. In temples across Fujian and Taiwan, Tudipo is likewise commonly enshrined side-by-side with Tudigong. Though folk sayings jokingly suggest that ‘Tudipo never wins favour’, in the hearts of Chaoshan people she remains a meticulous, tender, and approachable protector—the most intimate divine guardian of women, children, and families throughout the entire locality.
