Origin & Legend

Iron-Crutch Li is the most senior and most visually distinctive of the Eight Immortals. Legend holds that he was originally the handsome Daoist adept Li Xuan. Once, while his spirit journeyed astrally to attend a gathering at Mount Hua, he instructed his disciple to guard his physical body for seven days. On the sixth day, however, the disciple’s mother fell gravely ill, prompting him to cremate the master’s corpse in haste. When Li Xuan’s spirit returned, it found no body to re-enter and was forced to inhabit the corpse of a recently deceased beggar—thus transforming him into the dishevelled, limping figure known ever after. Thereafter, he wandered the world leaning on an iron crutch and bearing a gourd brimming with miraculous elixirs capable of curing even the rarest and most stubborn illnesses. Physicians and herbal merchants across China venerate him as their patron deity. His whimsical yet deeply compassionate appearance embodies the Daoist insight that outward appearances are unimportant—the true essence lies in spiritual clarity and luminosity. During the Eight Immortals’ Crossing of the Sea, he floated across the waves upon his gourd, earning him enduring affection as the most approachable and down-to-earth of all immortals among ordinary people.
