Origin & Legend

Tianguan Dadi is the foremost of the Daoist Three Officials (San Guan), bearing the full title 'Supreme Heavenly Official of the Shangyuan Festival, Bestower of Blessings, Ziwei Great Emperor'. The veneration of the Three Officials originates in ancient Chinese nature worship centred on Heaven, Earth, and Water; by the Eastern Han dynasty, the Way of the Five Pecks of Rice had already employed 'Three Officials talismans' to pray for healing and exorcism, making this one of Daoism’s earliest divine cults. Tianguan Dadi’s birthday falls on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month—the Shangyuan Festival, also known as the Lantern Festival—when Daoist temples hold grand jiao rituals and communities celebrate with lantern displays and festive decorations. Owing to the widespread belief in 'Tianguan bestows blessings', traditional households once commonly pasted New Year prints depicting the Heavenly Official granting blessings; scholar-officials and merchants especially revered him as an auspicious deity who conferred fortune and wealth. The Three Officials are typically enshrined together in San Guan halls, with Tianguan Dadi occupying the central position and portrayed in opulent, compassionate splendour.
