Origin & Legend

King Tai Shan, named Dong, presides over the Seventh Court of the Underworld; his title and identity are intrinsically linked to Mount Tai—the sacred East Peak—reflecting the historical evolution of the netherworld sovereign from the ancient deity Lord Tai Shan. He specially adjudicates souls who, in their earthly lives, incited discord, spread slander, or schemed to murder for profit. His domain includes the Hell of Burning Torment and numerous subsidiary hells. Owing to his profound theological and ritual affinities with the Dongyue deity system, his shrine enjoys especially fervent veneration among the Ten Courts enshrined in Dongyue Temples nationwide. Devotees observe his birthday on the 27th day of the 3rd lunar month with offerings and rites, invoking his unshakable, mountain-like authority and unwavering clarity in distinguishing right from wrong.
