Origin & Legend
Taibai Jinxing is the divine personification of Venus, known in antiquity as Taibai—the Brightest Star—and one of the Five Planets. In early Chinese cosmology, Taibai presided over warfare and military conflict, embodying the omen of battle; with the rise of Daoism, however, the deity evolved into a kindly, white-haired immortal who serves permanently at the Jade Emperor’s side as his chief emissary. In classical novels such as *Journey to the West*, he twice undertakes missions to recruit Sun Wukong, consistently advocating clemency and reconciliation—thereby cementing his image in popular imagination as a loyal, magnanimous elder. Revered by the common people as the celestial messenger bridging Heaven and Earth, he is venerated as Changgeng (the Evening Star) and Qiming (the Dawn Star). His altar is commonly found before the Hall of the Jade Emperor in Daoist temples nationwide, where devotees pray for cosmic harmony, the removal of disasters, the attraction of blessings, and the transformation of misfortune into good fortune.
