Origin & Legend

Zhang Xian is a folk deity venerated for bestowing children and safeguarding infants. Legend holds that his original name was Zhang Yuanxiao, who attained immortality during the Five Dynasties period at Mount Qingcheng in Sichuan. He was famed for using his pellet bow to strike down the Heavenly Dog—a celestial omen believed to menace infants from the skies. During the Song dynasty, the scholar Su Xun reportedly dreamed of Zhang Xian; shortly thereafter, he fathered two sons—sparking widespread belief in Zhang Xian’s power to grant offspring. Thereafter, both imperial courts and common households enshrined and worshipped him. Traditionally, families hung Zhang Xian’s image inside their bedrooms; after a child’s birth, they would burn incense and bow before it on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month, praying that he would use his pellet bow to drive away the Heavenly Dog, thereby shielding infants from untimely death and securing their safety and prosperity. As a patron deity of fertility and child protection, Zhang Xian is venerated alongside Guanyin (Bodhisattva of Compassion) and the Child-Giving Lady (Songzi Niangniang) by families seeking offspring.
