Origin & Legend
Sa Shoujian, a native of Xihé during the Song dynasty, originally practiced medicine; after inadvertently causing a patient’s death through medicinal error, he was stricken with remorse and abandoned medicine for the Daoist path, vowing to redeem his transgression by aiding others through Daoist cultivation. He journeyed to seek esoteric teachings from Zhang Jixian, the 30th Celestial Master, and en route encountered Zhang in disguise, who bestowed upon him the art of incanting jujubes, the Thunder Rites, and a sacred fan. Thereafter, Sa Shoujian healed the sick with blessed jujubes, averted calamities with inscribed talismans, and liberated the souls of the unburied dead through the Iron Vessel Refinement Ritual—thereby saving countless lives. One night, while lodging in a City God Temple, he inadvertently ignited the temple with Thunder Rites; the temple’s deity pursued him across a thousand li to lodge a formal complaint. Moved by the deity’s unwavering loyalty and integrity, Sa Shoujian petitioned the celestial bureaucracy on his behalf, securing his appointment as a divine official—this deity later became Wang Lingguan, Sa’s devoted guardian. During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, Sa Shoujian was enshrined as Lord Chong’en and ranked alongside Zhang Daoling, Ge Hong, and Xu Xun as one of the Four Great Celestial Masters; the Xihé lineage of Thunder Rites continues to this day.
