Origin & Legend
General Sanzhi, also known as General Sanzhi Xiumo—whose name is rendered in Chinese as 'Secret Deity'—serves as the supreme commander among the Twenty-Eight Generals of Ghostly Deities under the Four Heavenly Kings, leading eighty thousand ghostly troops on patrols throughout Jambudvīpa. According to Buddhist scriptures, he vows to protect all who recite the Golden Light Sutra, ensuring that warfare and epidemics do not arise within their lands and that benevolent deities continually offer their support. In the iconographic tradition of Chinese Buddhism, General Sanzhi appears among the Twenty Deva Kings enshrined in temple main halls: depicted with wrathful majesty, holding ritual implements and standing upon demon soldiers, he embodies the fierce power required to subdue evil forces and safeguard faithful practitioners. His cult, together with those of Skanda (Weituo) and the Dharmapāla Guardians (Jialan), forms the tripartite guardian system of East Asian Buddhist monasteries.
