Origin & Legend
Virudhaka’s Sanskrit name is Virūḍhaka. He resides on the southern slope of Mount Sumeru, at the Lapis Lazuli Terrace, and protects the southern continent of Jambudvīpa. The term 'growth' signifies his power to nurture sentient beings’ virtuous roots and ensure their permanent liberation from evil destinies. He commands two classes of yakṣa spirits: the Kumbhāṇḍas and the Piśācas. His iconic image holding a sword embodies the use of wisdom as a blade to sever emotional entanglements and afflictions while upholding the true Dharma. In folk belief, Virudhaka presides over wind; the sharp edge of his sword generates gusts—a notion that, together with Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s lute (harmonizing), Virūpākṣa’s serpent-rope (obedience), and Vaiśravaṇa’s treasure-umbrella (rain), forms the auspicious phrase 'wind-harmony-rain-abundance', expressing the people’s heartfelt wish for bountiful harvests. In the Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, he occupies the second position from the south, clad in azure-blue armor and radiating formidable, vigorous energy.
