Origin & Legend

The cult of the Three Mountain Kings originated from Dushan, Mingshan, and Jinshan—three famed mountains in the eastern Guangdong region of Jieyang (present-day Jiexi County). Legend holds that the three deities manifested their power to assist Emperor Taizu of the Song dynasty in subduing the Southern Han kingdom and saving the emperor in peril; in gratitude, Taizu conferred upon them the title 'Three Mountain Kings', and Emperor Taizong later bestowed the honorific temple name 'Mingkuang'. Initially a local earth deity cult of the Chaoshan area, the veneration of the Three Mountain Kings spread widely with Hakka migration, evolving into the principal protective deity of the Hakka communities of eastern Guangdong. In Taiwan, nearly every Hakka village in Pingtung and Hsinchu counties maintains a temple dedicated to the Three Mountain Kings; similarly, overseas Hakka associations across Southeast Asia enshrine them. Every year, pilgrims flock to the Lingtian Ancestral Temple in Hebo, Jiexi, especially during the deities’ birthday celebrations, making it the universally acknowledged ancestral seat of the global Three Mountain Kings faith—a tradition sustained continuously for over a millennium.
