Origin & Legend
Lingbao Tianzun, also known as Tai-shang Daodao Jun (Great Dao Lord of the Highest Clarity) and Shangqing Dadi (Great Emperor of the Highest Clarity), is the second of the Three Pure Ones in Daoism and resides in the Shangqing Sacred Realm—Yuyu Heaven. His veneration originates from the Six Dynasties-era Shangqing and Lingbao scriptural traditions; he is said to emanate from the original spirit of Yuanshi Tianzun and is also called 'Yuchen Daodao Jun' (Jade Dawn Great Dao Lord). Daoist scriptures describe Lingbao Tianzun as manifesting cyclically across eons, frequently appearing in human form to aid and liberate sentient beings; the Lingbao True Scriptures he transmits are dedicated to worldly salvation and spiritual deliverance. Popular understanding of this deity among the Three Pure Ones largely derives from temple iconography in Sanqing Halls: Yuanshi Tianzun occupies the central position, while Lingbao Tianzun stands to his left, holding a Taiji diagram. His birthday falls on the Summer Solstice—the day when yang energy reaches its zenith and the first trace of yin begins to emerge—thus forming a cosmological counterpart to Yuanshi Tianzun’s birthday on the Winter Solstice.
