Origin & Legend

The Thirty-Six Thunder Generals constitute a cohort of thirty-six celestial warriors within the Daoist Thunder Department pantheon, serving under the supreme authority of Jiutian Yingyuan Leisheng Pu Hua Tianzun. Led by senior marshals including Deng Bowen, Xin Hanchen, Zhang Yuanbo, and Tao Gongyun, they accompany Lei Gong (the Thunder God), Dian Mu (the Lightning Mother), Feng Bo (the Wind Earl), and Yu Shi (the Rain Master) in deploying thunder, summoning rain, administering heavenly punishment, and expelling malign forces. In Daoist liturgical practice—whether for exorcism, subduing demonic influences, praying for clear skies, or imploring rain—ritual masters invariably submit memorial petitions and invoke the Thunder Generals’ cohort to wield swords and enforce divine law. Folk belief holds that when evildoers are struck dead by lightning, it is precisely these Thirty-Six Generals carrying out a celestial execution order—thus endowing them with a moral function of warning and encouraging virtuous conduct. The Ming-dynasty novel *Fengshen Yanyi* (Investiture of the Gods) further popularized their lore by recounting how Grand Preceptor Wen Zhong was posthumously enfeoffed as Jiutian Yingyuan Leisheng Pu Hua Zhenyuan Jun (True Primordial Lord of Thunder, Who Responds to Heaven’s Mandate and Universally Transforms through Thunderous Sound), placed in command of twenty-four Thunder Generals—a narrative adaptation that cemented the Thunder Department’s martial hierarchy in popular imagination.
