Origin & Legend

Chen Yuanguang was a renowned Tang-dynasty general during the reign of Emperor Gaozong. He accompanied his father, General Chen Zheng, leading imperial troops into Fujian to quell local unrest. After his father’s death, Chen Yuanguang assumed command, petitioned the imperial court to establish Zhangzhou Prefecture, and became its first prefect. He promoted education, encouraged agriculture and sericulture, and facilitated commerce—earning recognition as Zhangzhou’s foremost developer. Following his death in battle, local people erected temples in his honour; successive dynasties conferred upon him ever-higher titles, culminating in the imperial designation ‘Kaizhang Shengwang’ (Sacred King Who Opened Zhangzhou), with Yunxiao Weihui Temple serving as the ancestral temple. For over a millennium, Zhangzhou descendants migrating to Taiwan and Southeast Asia have carried his incense ashes and spirit tablets with them. Today, temples dedicated to Kaizhang Shengwang abound in Taiwanese counties and cities where Zhangzhou people settled, while overseas Zhangzhou diaspora associations likewise enshrine him as their principal deity. His cult thus functions not only as a guardian of native soil but also as a powerful marker of ancestral identity and cultural continuity for the Zhangzhou lineage.
