Origin & Legend
Houtu Huangdiqi is the sole goddess among the Four Sovereigns of Daoism, originating in ancient veneration of the Earth as a nurturing mother. The phrase ‘Huangtian Houtu’ (August Heaven and Honoured Earth) has been paired since antiquity, with Houtu representing the terrestrial counterpart to the celestial sovereign, Haotian Shangdi. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty personally performed sacrifices to Houtu at the Shuizhen Mound in Fenying, establishing a precedent followed by successive dynasties—earth rituals held with equal solemnity and grandeur as those offered to Heaven. In Daoist theology, she is venerated under the full title Chengtian Xiaofa Houde Guangda Houtu Huangdiqi and entrusted with governing yin-yang generation, the beauty of all creation, and the earth’s mountains and rivers; thus, in popular belief, she is revered as a compassionate maternal deity who bestows children and blessings. The Houtu Temple in Wanrong County, Shanxi Province, is traditionally believed to stand on the very site where Emperor Wu sacrificed to Houtu, earning it the distinction of being hailed as the primordial ancestral temple of all earth shrines across China. Her birthday falls on the 18th day of the 3rd lunar month, when devotees—especially those seeking offspring—gather to offer prayers and vows.
