Origin & Legend
Guan Ping was the eldest son of Guan Yu. Historical records state that he served alongside his father in military campaigns and was executed together with him by the forces of Eastern Wu in the twenty-fourth year of the Jian’an era (219 CE). In later folk tradition, he was deified and honoured as Guansheng Taizi (Crown Prince of the Holy Lord Guan) and Jiezhong Wang (King of Utmost Loyalty), serving as one of the two principal attendant deities—alongside Zhou Cang—in temples dedicated to Lord Guan. In temple iconography, Guan Ping, fair-faced and holding a seal, stands to the left of Lord Guan’s central image, while Zhou Cang, dark-complexioned and wielding a broadsword, stands to the right—a complementary pairing of civil grace and martial vigour that has become the most iconic arrangement in Guan Di temples across the Chinese-speaking world. As Lord Guan is venerated both as the Martial God of Wealth and as a supreme protector of the Dharma, Guan Ping too is widely worshipped; his youthful martyrdom and exemplary filial devotion to a father renowned for loyalty have made his life a cherished model of righteousness and filial piety in popular belief.
