Origin & Legend

Venerable Nakula is traditionally said to have been born into the Kshatriya warrior caste and served as a renowned strongman famed for his extraordinary physical strength. After renouncing worldly life to become a Buddhist monk, he redirected his formidable energy toward subduing inner delusions and afflictive thoughts. Through unwavering seated meditation—transitioning from outward action to inward stillness—he cultivated profound samadhi. A verse praises his unshakable mental composure, likening it to perfectly still water. Drawing from his own transformation, he taught that true heroism lies not in lifting cauldrons but in mastering the unruly 'monkey mind'. Revered for his lifelong dedication to silent, motionless meditation, he earned the epithet 'The Seated Arhat', and his iconographic representation consistently depicts him in tranquil, contemplative repose.
