Origin & Legend

Venerable Bhadra’s mother undertook a long, arduous journey over mountains and rivers while in labor, and thus he was named Bhadra—meaning 'the Virtuous One'. After ordination, he attained the fruition of an Arhat and, moved by compassion for his mother’s hardship, vowed to traverse mountains and rivers on behalf of all sentient beings, dedicating his life to spreading the Dharma across rugged terrain and vast waters—just as a sturdy vessel ferries beings across the ocean of suffering. Legend holds that he sailed far eastward to the Indonesian archipelago to teach the Dharma, leaving his footprints upon countless rivers and seas. Later generations sculpted him in the iconic pose of crossing a river while bearing sacred texts, earning him the epithet 'Guo Jiang Luo Han'—a symbol of unwavering courage in the face of peril and of compassionate, universal salvation.
