Origin & Legend

Venerable Rahula was the Buddha’s only son born during his lay life; he entered his mother’s womb on the very night the Buddha renounced worldly life, and six years later followed the Buddha into monastic life—becoming the first śrāmaṇera in Buddhist history. Though exceptionally intelligent from youth, he remained humble and unassuming, cultivating patience and perseverance with unwavering diligence; when subjected to abuse or injustice, he responded with silent forbearance. Renowned for his discreet, inward spiritual cultivation, he was honoured as ‘Foremost in Secret Practice’. Śāriputra served as his preceptor, and within the Saṅgha he strictly upheld the monastic precepts, setting an exemplary standard for all novices. Because he habitually engaged in quiet, profound reflection upon the Dharma, his iconographic representations consistently portray him in deep contemplation—hence his epithet ‘Chensi Luohan’ (the Contemplative Arhat), symbolising the spirit of introspective self-cultivation and scholarly devotion.
