Origin & Legend

Yun Shi is traditionally believed to have been the wife of Lu Ban, the legendary master carpenter and divine artificer of the Spring and Autumn period, and herself a highly skilled artisan. According to legend, Lu Ban frequently traveled far afield to supervise construction projects, enduring wind and rain. Moved by his toil, Yun Shi mused, 'If only he could carry a pavilion upon his person!' Drawing upon her craftsmanship, she fashioned the earliest umbrella—using slender bamboo for its frame and silk for its canopy—creating a portable, collapsible device held overhead. Over successive dynasties, this invention evolved: oil-treated paper replaced silk, enhancing durability and affordability, until umbrellas became ubiquitous household items. In gratitude for her inventive brilliance, artisans engaged in umbrella making, repair, and rain-gear production venerate Yun Shi as their patron deity. In Lu Ban Temples throughout China, she is commonly enshrined alongside her husband—sharing his altar and receiving joint offerings—a timeless testament to the harmonious partnership of master craftsman and ingenious consort.
