Origin & Legend
The Jianzhai Envoy is none other than Jinnaluo Wang (King Kinnara), a Dharma-protecting deity assigned to safeguard monastic kitchens and ensure both the ritual purity of food preparation and the proper decorum observed by monks during meals. According to tradition, during the late Yuan dynasty, when the Red Turban rebels besieged Shaolin Monastery, a fearsome, red-haired ascetic suddenly appeared atop a mountain peak, brandishing a kitchen fire-stirring rod; his imposing stature struck such terror into the attackers that they fled in disarray. Only afterward did the monastic community realize this was Jinnaluo Wang manifesting himself to protect the temple—thereafter venerating him as a temple guardian and enshrining his image in formal worship. In Han Chinese Chan Buddhist monasteries, a dedicated Jianzhai Bodhisattva shrine is established within the dining hall, and before communal meals, monks chant the Jianzhai Mantra to express gratitude for his protection. His iconography—with its prominent horns, fire-stirring rod, and wrathful stance—embodies the quintessential protector ideal: outwardly fierce and formidable, yet inwardly imbued with profound compassion and benevolent resolve.
