Origin & Legend
Huang Daopo, a native of Wunijing in Songjiang, was a renowned cotton textile technologist of the Yuan dynasty. As a young woman, she wandered to Yazhou (present-day Sanya in Hainan), where she learned advanced cotton spinning, weaving, and dyeing techniques from Li women. In her later years, she returned home and taught local artisans methods for threading yarn accurately, harmonising colours, warping looms, and weaving intricate patterns. She also revolutionised cotton-processing tools—designing improved roller gins, bow-shaped cotton carders, and a three-spindle foot-treadle spinning wheel—thereby transforming Wunijing into a celebrated textile centre and enabling Songjiang Prefecture to clothe the entire realm. Grateful locals erected shrines in her honour, venerating her as the Cotton Goddess and Patron Deity of Textile Craftsmanship. Huang Daopo stands among the rare figures in Chinese history whose technical contributions have earned divine status—a testament to the enduring legacy of ordinary people’s extraordinary achievements.
