Origin & Legend

Bian Que, originally named Qin Yue-ren, was a native of Bohai Commandery during the Warring States period. He studied under the immortal physician Chang Sang-jun and received esoteric medical formulas and techniques. He pioneered pulse diagnosis and integrated the Four Diagnostic Methods—observation, auscultation and olfaction, inquiry, and palpation—into a cohesive clinical framework. His medical practice spanned numerous Central Plains states, adapting to local customs: at times he served as a gynaecologist, at others as a paediatrician or specialist in disorders of the ears, eyes, and joints. Historical records recount his two legendary resuscitations of the Crown Prince of the State of Guo, as well as the famous anecdote in which he admonished Duke Huan of Cai against concealing illness—a cautionary tale encapsulated in the idiom 'to shun medical treatment out of shame'. Revered by posterity as the Ancestor of Medicine, he was posthumously enfeoffed by the Song dynasty as the 'Divine King of Miraculous Response'. For over a millennium, the Bian Que Temple in Neiqiu County, Hebei Province, has remained a vibrant centre of veneration: physicians pray for mastery of precise diagnosis, while patients seek his miraculous healing power.
